Rabbit Cages

When you are in a place where you want to give your brand new bunny a wonderful home that he can enjoy for years, you'll find that it is time for you to see what kind of cages are available for you. Learning about what kind of cages are best and how you can clean them is an important part of taking good care of your new bunny.

First, you should consider the size of cage you need. Remember the bigger the cage, the happier the bunny. You will require a cage that is roughly 24 x 36 inches for smaller breeds of rabbits. For larger breeds of rabbits a cage that is roughly 30 x 36 inches, when your rabbit weights 8 pounds or more. However, you should consider a two-story cage, when you need more space.

Also consider the design of the cage. Because most rabbits can be litter trained, a solid floor is possible. A wire floor can chafe your rabbits feet and cause them to be sore, though if a wire cage is your only option, make sure that you put down something like a piece of flat wood or a grass mat to protect your rabbit's hocks.

You need to make sure the door is large enough for you to get the rabbit safely in and out of its cage. You need to be able to get to the litter pan and lift it out completely. Larger rabbits are easier to get in and out if you have a side door. A rabbit cage that opens on the side and along the bottom may be perfect for you when you are in a hurry, just make sure there are no exposed wires and the edges of the door are smooth.

There are various options available to bed down you bunny. When you want a cozy area, sisal mats are wonderful. You can keep your bunny extra cozy and warm by adding towels, carpets, and scraps of fabric or a fleece blanket. Never use evergreens, such as pine and cedar shavings, since the aromatic oils of the wood is not good for the lungs and liver of a rabbit. It is healthier to use hay and straw.

Remember, regular cage cleaning is vital to ensure the best health of your rabbit. You begin by removing any loose cloth or bedding material and then remove the food bowl and water bottle. Using a mixture of hot water and vinegar, you will spray the cage down. You can safely return your bunny to its cage, since this mixture is not harmful to your rabbit. Give the litter box location some much-needed extra attention while cleaning.

When the hutch is completely dry, line it with several layers of newspapers, while adding a few extra layers in the litter tray area. You can add kitty litter to achieve extra absorbency. Some rabbits may make a mess with it, yet others do quite well. You can observe your rabbit to see how well your rabbit reacts to the litter.

Now you may add the bedding material, whether you choose to use shredded newspaper, scraps of fabric or straw. Many bunny owners place shredded newspaper in the open area and then us straw in the enclosed shelter area. Once you do all this, you can refill the food dish and water bottle and return the bunny to its cage.

In order to choose a reliable rabbit cage and then keep it clean, this is all you really need to do when you want a bunny home that will keep your bunny happy!

Your rabbit is important and you need to give it with great care, getting the wrong rabbit hutch can cause your bunny harm. A wire bottom can hurt the rabbits feet, does it have enough space to roam and get exercise? Find out more about rabbit hutches, rabbit cages and rabbit runs at Josey Ramosse website.
